Mission

At the Center 4 Play Therapy in Brooklyn, we make it our mission to create a safe, caring and therapeutic environment for children and families. We use play in an evidence-based setting to help children to communicate their feelings and relate their experiences so that we and the family can help them to overcome trauma and to grow. Our team of caring, licensed, and professional child therapists are made up of fully qualified therapists; LCSWs, LMHCs, and Psychologists; devoted to assisting children from preschool age through the adolescent years. We are also committed to a philosophy of ongoing education and training so that we can always provide the most advanced and caring therapeutic techniques available.

Therapy

Because play is a child's native language, we are able to help them better express what is holding them back, what is too painful or strange to express in words, or whatever it is they may need help with. During each therapy session, we use child-centered play therapy to help children learn to better express their feelings and communicate despite the barriers of disability, emotional distress, or trauma. During therapy sessions, our therapists use objects and toys to encourage communication -- and in turn get at the root of the challenge. We provide therapy sessions to children ages 3 to 12, as well as to their family members, who can also learn to better understand how to communicate with their struggling child. Our therapy targets issues like ADHD, behavioral disorders, anxiety, family conflict, sadness, trauma and more.

Workshops

Are you a play therapist? Would you like to continue to improve your skills under the supervision of trained experts? We offer workshops for learning play therapists to sharpen their therapeutic skills and stay up-to-date with the latest methods and literature. Come and interact with other play-therapy specialists who will share their experiences, and provide valuable advice and support.

Consultation

Occasionally, play therapists will encounter a new, novel, or unusual case that she or he cannot understand based on experience and training alone. Here at the Center 4 Play Therapy in Brooklyn, we offer consultation services to our fellow play therapy practitioners as well as to play therapists in training to advance the art and science of using play to help the youngest and most vulnerable among us to blossom and grow.

What is Play Therapy?

THE BEGINNING STARTS WITH UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM:

A child may be unaware that he feels hurt and rejected

WHY PLAY THERAPY?

Play therapy is a proven therapeutic modality that allows children to grow, learn, heal and thrive. Children often do not have the verbal abilities to express their feelings. Play therapy, conducted by a trained play therapist, offers children the opportunity to process and assess appropriate coping skills, behaviors and world views.

“I take the stance that successful therapy must be an inclusive approach – addressing all aspects of the child’s life, including home, school, and community.”

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Play therapy is a way of being with the child that honors their unique developmental level and looks for ways of helping in the ‘language’ of the child — play. Licensed mental health professionals therapeutically use play to help their clients…to better express themselves and resolve their problems.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Play therapy especially benefits children ages 3-11 and their families.

  • Become more responsible for behaviors
  • Problem solving skills
  • Boost their self-confidence
  • Develop empathy and respect for thoughts and feelings of others
  • Learn to experience, express and regulate emotion
  • Acquire new social skills and relational skills

EMOTIONAL DISTRESS BECOMES SYMBOLIZED IN THE PLAY THERAPY

When a child playing with puppets will tell a story where one puppet is being picked on it ridiculed by the other the puppets!

THE OVERALL GOAL

To foster healing in children, help them to grow emotionally, and allow them the opportunity to thrive in everyday life.
